Early life and education
Ioan Gruffudd was born on October 6, 1973, in Cardiff, United Kingdom. He grew up in a household that used the Welsh language, with parents who were teachers. His father served as a headmaster at two different Welsh-language schools. During his childhood, the family moved around South Wales before settling in Cardiff, where he attended Welsh-medium schools including Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf.
Acting career beginnings
His professional acting career started early at the age of 13 in the Welsh television film Austin. Between 1987 and 1994, he appeared in the popular Welsh language soap opera Pobol y Cwm. During this era, he also participated in stage productions, including a performance at the 1991 Urdd Eisteddfod.
Film and television projects
Throughout the 2000s, he appeared in a variety of high-profile projects. He played Lancelot in the 2004 film King Arthur and portrayed Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in the 2005 film Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel. In 2006, he took on the role of the abolitionist William Wilberforce in the historical drama Amazing Grace.

Ioan Gruffudd is a native Welsh speaker and was inducted into the Gorsedd Beirdd Ynys Prydain at the rank of Druid in 2003. He was previously married to Alice Evans, whom he met during the filming of 102 Dalmatians. They married in Mexico in 2007 and have two daughters together.
