Early life and training
Irungbam Surkumar Singh was born in Imphal, India. He showed talent at a young age when he represented Manipur in under-16 matches at age 13. This performance led to his enrollment at the Tata Football Academy.
He spent four years studying and training at the Tata Football Academy. During his time there, he primarily functioned as a center back. He eventually graduated from the academy in the year 2000.
Professional football career
The player began his professional path with East Bengal. His coach at the time, Syed Nayemuddin, transitioned him into a right back role. This move helped him secure the club's first National League title. He later joined Mahindra United where he won the Durand Cup, though he suffered a ligament injury during a match in Mumbai.
Irungbam returned to East Bengal for a second stint and achieved a treble in 2003. This included winning the ASEAN Cup, the National Football League, and the Kolkata Premier League. He later moved to Mohun Bagan in 2009 and scored a goal during his debut season. He also played for the Mumbai Tigers F.C. In the 2013 I-League 2nd Division and joined United Sikkim F.C. In 2014.
International career and honors
Irungbam Surkumar Singh made his debut for the India national team in 2001 during a World Cup qualifier against the UAE. He became a consistent player for the national side following the 2005 SAFF Cup victory. He has scored four goals for the international team, including a goal against Yemen in Pune.
His individual achievements include being named the AIFF Player of the Year in 2006. He has also been part of teams that won the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008 and the Nehru Cup in 2007 and 2009. His career includes various titles such as the IFA Shield and the ASEAN Club Championship.
