Early life and background
Andrew James Matfin Bell was born in Billingham, Teesside, in the United Kingdom. He grew up with his mother, Eileen Matfin, and his older sister, Kathryn. His father, John Bell, was a toolmaker who left the family before Jamie was born. Jamie began dancing after following his sister to her ballet classes.
In 1999, casting directors chose him from over 2,000 boys for the lead role in the film Billy Elliot. He played an eleven-year-old boy who discovers a passion for ballet, much to the dismay of his working-class father and brother. This performance brought him significant attention and several awards, including a BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role, which made him one of the youngest people to win in that category.

Following his debut, he appeared in diverse film roles throughout the 2000s. Credits from that decade include Deathwatch, Nicholas Nickleby, King Kong, and Jumper. In 2005, he also appeared in the music video for the song Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day.

On television, he portrayed Abraham Woodhull in the AMC historical drama series Turn: Washington's Spies between 2014 and 2017.

Jamie Bell is an atheist and is known to be a dedicated supporter of Arsenal F.C. Regarding his interest in football. He has been married twice. In 2012, he married actress Evan Rachel Wood. They have a son together who was born in 2013, though the couple separated in 2014. They later entered a custody dispute, which was resolved in 2023 with terms for the child to live in Los Angeles.
