Early life and real name
Jason Joel Desrouleaux was born on September 21, 1989, in Miramar, Florida. His parents are from Haiti, and his first language was Haitian Creole. He started singing at a young age and wrote his first song at the age of eight.
He attended performing arts schools in Florida, including Dillard High School and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. During his youth, he wrote songs for other artists such as Diddy, Danity Kane, and Lil Wayne while developing his own skills as a singer and dancer.
How Jason became famous
Jason Derulo won the grand prize on the 2006 season finale of the television show Showtime at the Apollo. Music producer J. R. Rotem discovered him and signed him to Beluga Heights Records, which later became part of the Warner Music Group.
He released his debut single Whatcha Say in May 2009. The track reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and sold over five million digital downloads, earning an RIAA certification of quintuple platinum.
