Who is Jason Momoa?
Early life and background
Jason Momoa was born in Honolulu, United States, on August 1, 1979. His mother worked as a photographer, while his father earned a living as a painter. Following the divorce of his parents shortly after birth, Jason moved with his mother to Norwalk, Iowa, where he spent his formative years. He attended Norwalk High School and later pursued higher education at institutions including Colorado State University and Des Moines Area Community College. During his youth in Iowa, he became interested in rock climbing and bouldering after visiting Custer State Park in South Dakota.
Rise to television fame
At the age of 19, Jason returned to live and work in Honolulu, where he decided to audition for a television role. He secured the part of Jason Ioane in the syndicated action drama series Baywatch Hawaii, appearing on the show from 1999 to 2001. This initial exposure led to further television work, including a main cast role in the Fox drama series North Shore. In 2005, he joined the cast of the science fiction series Stargate Atlantis as Ronon Dex, a character he played through 2009. To prepare for the physical demands of this role, he learned martial arts.
His career reached a new level when he was cast as Khal Drogo in the first two seasons of the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. For his audition, he performed a traditional Haka dance to convey an intense challenge. He subsequently took on the lead role in the historical drama series Frontier and later starred in the Apple television series See. In 2025, he appeared in the historical drama series Chief of War.

Jason expanded his career into major feature films, portraying the title character in Conan the Barbarian. He joined the DC Extended Universe as Arthur Curry, also known as Aquaman, first making a cameo appearance in Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice. He reprised this role in Justice League and starred in his own solo films, including Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. His film credits also include playing Duncan Idaho in the science fiction film Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve, and starring in the action film Fast X as the villain Dante Reyes.

Jason was previously in a relationship with actress Simmone Jade Mackinnon, and the two became engaged before parting ways. He later began a relationship with actress Lisa Bonet. The couple welcomed a daughter named Lola Momoa and a son named Nakoa-Wolf Momoa. After separating, their divorce was finalized. He later entered a relationship with actress Adria Arjona. Standing at a height of 198 centimeters, Jason maintains various personal hobbies, including playing the bass guitar, mandolin, ukulele, and guitar, and he also practices Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
