Biography
Who is Jason Statham?
Early life and athletic career
Jason Statham was born on July 26, 1967, in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, in the United Kingdom. His mother, Eileen Yates, worked as a dancer, and his father, Barry Statham, worked as a street seller, house painter, coal miner, and singer. During his youth, Jason moved to Great Yarmouth and chose not to follow his father into market selling immediately, focusing instead on practicing martial arts like kickboxing, karate, and Chinese martial arts.
Jason developed a strong passion for football and diving while growing up. He attended the local grammar school from 1978 to 1983 and played football for the school team alongside future actor Vinnie Jones. Jason dedicated himself intensely to diving, practicing daily and serving as a member of Great Britain's national diving team. He competed for England in the 1990 Commonwealth Games, participating in the 10 metre, 3 metre, and 1 metre diving events.
Modeling and entry into film
While training at London's Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, Jason was discovered by the sports modelling agency Sports Promotions. He secured modeling contracts for various brands during the mid-1990s, including Tommy Hilfiger, Griffin, and Levi's. In 1997, he became a prominent model for the clothing brand French Connection, which appreciated his masculine and approachable look. Despite his modeling work, he still took on street vending jobs to earn extra money.
Jason's background working at market stalls caught the attention of fledgling filmmaker Guy Ritchie, who needed a streetwise actor for his upcoming project. Ritchie cast Jason in the 1998 crime comedy thriller Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The film became a commercial and critical success, helping launch Jason into the public eye. He collaborated with Ritchie again by starring in the 2000 film Snatch, which grossed over eighty million dollars at the box office.
Rise as an action star
Following his early successes, Jason transitioned into American and international action cinema. He appeared in films such as Ghosts of Mars and The One in 2001. In 2002, he took on the lead role of driver Frank Martin in the action film The Transporter, a project written by Luc Besson. This film spawned two sequels, Transporter 2 and Transporter 3, which firmly established Jason as a leading action movie star.
Jason continued to expand his filmography with prominent roles in major ensemble and solo action projects. He appeared in The Italian Job in 2003, Crank in 2006, and The Bank Job in 2008. He also starred as Lee Christmas in the ensemble action series The Expendables and joined the cast of the Fast and Furious franchise as Deckard Shaw, even co-producing the spin-off film Hobbs and Shaw.
