Who is Javi García?
Early life and Real Madrid
Javi García was born in Mula, Spain. He developed his skills within the youth system of Real Madrid. He made his first appearance for the senior team at age 17 during a match against Levante on November 28, 2004.
During the 2005-06 season, he played for the reserve side in the Segunda División. In 2006, he helped the Spanish under-19 team win the UEFA European Championship. This achievement led to him training with the first team under Fabio Capello.
Career in Portugal and Spain
In August 2007, he moved to Osasuna for a fee of 2.5 million euros. After playing for four seasons, he returned to the Santiago Bernabéu for the 2008-09 season. He eventually moved to Portugal in July 2009 to join Benfica on a five-year contract.
While at Benfica, he won the Primeira Liga and three Taça da Liga titles. He was a regular starter during his first season and scored a well-known header against Naval 1 de Maio. He also scored against Chelsea in a Champions League quarter-final match.
Success at Manchester City and Zenit
Javi García signed with Manchester City in August 2012 for 15.8 million pounds. During his time in England, he won the Premier League and the Football League Cup in the 2013-14 season. He scored a goal against Stoke City during his Premier League debut.
He moved to the Russian Premier League in August 2014 to join Zenit Saint Petersburg. He helped the club secure the national championship during the 2014-15 season. His stint in Russia also included winning the Russian Cup and the Russian Super Cup.
Later years and retirement
In August 2017, he returned to Spain to play for Real Betis. He spent three seasons at the club and played 64 matches. He scored one goal for the team during a match against Alavés in March 2018.
He moved back to Portugal in August 2020 to join Boavista. After scoring his first goal for the club in October 2020, he eventually retired from professional football on June 22, 2022. Following his retirement, he joined the coaching staff at Benfica.
