Early life and education
Jayma Mays: Jamia Suzette Mays was born on July 16, 1979, in Bristol, United States, and grew up in Grundy, Virginia. Her father worked as a high school teacher in the coal mining industry. During her youth at age 15, she secured a job reading obituaries at a local radio station.
After finishing her studies at Grundy Senior High School, she earned an associate degree from Southwest Virginia Community College. She then spent a year attending Virginia Tech before transferring to Radford University to complete her education.
Career beginnings and film roles
In 2004, Jayma made her first television appearance in an episode of Joey. The following year, she secured a supporting role in the thriller film Red Eye, which marked her feature film debut. Her early television credits included appearances on Six Feet Under, Stacked, and How I Met Your Mother.
She continued landing guest roles on various programs such as Heroes, Pushing Daises, Ugly Betty, and House. On the big screen, she appeared in projects like Flags of Our Fathers, Epic Movie, and Bar Starz. She also portrayed Amy alongside Kevin James in the comedy film Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
Television success and Glee
In 2009, Jayma began playing guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury on the Fox musical comedy series Glee. She performed several musical numbers on the show, including a solo performance of a song from The Rocky Horror Show during a themed episode. She remained part of the main cast for the first three seasons before transitioning to a guest star role.
Beyond Glee, she portrayed Debbie in the sitcom The Millers from 2013 to 2014. She also starred as prosecutor Carol Anne Keane in the NBC comedy series Trial & Error from 2017 to 2018. In 2021, she joined the cast of the fantasy sequel Disenchanted.
Personal life
Jayma met actor Adam Campbell on the set of the film Epic Movie in 2006. The couple later married and welcomed their son into the world on August 21, 2016. Outside of acting, she participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge in August 2014 to help raise awareness for the disease ALS.
