Who is Jenny Slate?
Early life and education
Jenny Slate was born in Milton, Massachusetts, on March 25, 1982. Her parents are Nancy and Ronald Slate, and she grew up with two sisters in a Jewish family. She attended Milton Academy, where she graduated as valedictorian before continuing her education at Columbia University.
During her time at Columbia University, Jenny studied literature and immersed herself in campus comedy. She helped form an improv group named Fruit Paunch, starred in the Varsity Show, and crossed paths with Gabe Liedman, who later became her longtime comedy partner. She officially graduated from the university in 2004.
Television and comedy career
Jenny built her early comedy career through live variety shows in New York City and her work with the comedy duo Gabe & Jenny. She performed a one woman show titled Jenny Slate: Dead Millionaire at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and made several appearances on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
In 2009, Jenny joined the cast of Saturday Night Live for its thirty fifth season. She later secured recurring roles on popular television programs including Parks and Recreation, House of Lies, Kroll Show, and Bob's Burgers. She also voiced the character Missy Foreman-Greenwald on the animated Netflix series Big Mouth until 2020.
Film and writing projects
Jenny gained major critical acclaim for her leading role in the comedy drama film Obvious Child in 2014. Her performance earned her the Critics Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in a Comedy. She also lent her voice to numerous animated films such as The Lorax, Zootopia, and The Secret Life of Pets.
Alongside her acting work, Jenny co-created the children's short film and book series Marcel the Shell with Shoes On alongside Dean Fleischer Camp. She also published several written works including a children's book, a memoir about her childhood home titled About the House, and a collection of essays titled Little Weirds.
Personal life and family
Jenny married filmmaker Dean Fleischer Camp in September 2012 after moving to Los Angeles in the early 2010s. The couple collaborated on the Marcel the Shell projects before announcing their separation in May 2016. She subsequently had a brief relationship with actor Chris Evans.
In September 2019, Jenny announced her engagement to art curator and author Ben Shattuck. After pandemic delays, the couple married on New Year's Eve in 2021 and welcomed a daughter in late 2020. They later lived in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, before planning a move back to Brooklyn.
