Biography
Who is Jérémy Toulalan?
Early life and club beginnings
Jérémy Toulalan was born in Nantes, France, and began his football path at the local youth academy of his hometown club, FC Nantes. He made his first team debut during the 2001 to 2002 season, appearing as a substitute in a match against Rennes during the annual Derby Breton. After spending time with the reserve squad and seeing limited playing time over the next couple of seasons, he established himself firmly in the midfield during the 2004 to 2005 campaign.
During his breakout 2004 to 2005 season, Jérémy Toulalan scored his only goal for Nantes in a 2 to 0 victory over Strasbourg. His strong defensive midfield displays earned him the UNFP Young Player of the Year award and a spot in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year. He played one more solid season with Nantes before transferring to a larger club.
Success with Olympique Lyonnais
Following the 2005 to 2006 season, Jérémy Toulalan transferred to Olympique Lyonnais on a four-year contract after Lyon paid a transfer fee of seven million euros. Because his preferred number 17 was retired by Lyon out of respect for Marc-Vivien Foe, he took the number 28 shirt. He made his competitive debut for Lyon against his former club Nantes, playing the full match in a 3 to 1 victory.
Jérémy Toulalan became a core player for Lyon, helping the club capture back-to-back league titles in 2006 to 2007 and 2007 to 2008. He formed strong midfield partnerships with players such as Juninho, Kim Kallstrom, and Tiago. In March 2008, he signed a contract extension keeping him at Lyon until 2013, and he later scored his first career goal for the club in a Coupe de la Ligue match against Metz.
Later club career in Spain and Monaco
In June 2011, Jérémy Toulalan moved to Spanish La Liga club Malaga on a four-year deal. He scored his first goal for the team with a header in a win against Villarreal in November 2011 and added further goals against Mallorca and Getafe. However, his debut season in Spain was cut short in March 2012 when a training injury required an operation and forced him to miss the remainder of the campaign.
After his time in Spain, Jérémy Toulalan returned to France and signed a two-year contract with AS Monaco in July 2013. Throughout his extensive club career, he earned a reputation for a humble demeanor, simple distribution, good technique, and effective tackling from his defensive midfield position.
International career with France
Jérémy Toulalan represented France across multiple youth levels starting with the under-17 team in 2000. He also played for the under-18 squad and helped the under-21 team reach the semi-finals of the 2006 UEFA U-21 Championship, where he was named to the Team of the Tournament playing as a left winger.
He received his first senior international call-up in 2006 for a Euro 2008 qualifying match against the Faroe Islands, playing the full 90 minutes in a 5 to 0 victory. Jérémy Toulalan went on to represent his nation at UEFA Euro 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He later received a one-match international ban following the team's strike during the 2010 tournament.
