Jessica Elizabeth Sanchez was born in Chula Vista, California. Her mother, Edita Sanchez, has family roots in the Philippines. Her father, Gilbert Sanchez, is a Mexican American who served in the United States Navy Reserve. Growing up in the Eastlake neighborhood, she attended middle school locally.
Even as a child, she showed an interest in performing. In 2005, she appeared on the show Showtime at the Apollo to sing a rendition of a classic Aretha Franklin track. The following year, she entered the NBC competition program America's Got Talent. Although she participated as a wildcard entry, she did not advance to the final rounds of that particular season.
Rise to fame on American Idol
Her national breakthrough occurred when she auditioned for the eleventh season of American Idol in San Diego. She moved through the initial elimination rounds before facing a setback in April 2012. The judges exercised their save power to keep her in the contest. She continued performing and eventually reached the grand finale.
Jessica Sanchez ended the season as the runner-up to winner Phillip Phillips. Following the show, she performed at the National Memorial Day Concert held at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. She also signed a recording contract with Interscope Records later that summer.
Music career and releases
In 2013, she released her first studio album titled Me, You & the Music. The lead single from this project, Tonight, featured vocals by Ne-Yo. She eventually parted ways with her record label following these commercial results.
She continued to record music independently. She released an extended play titled Christmas with Jessica in December 2015, which featured her versions of classic holiday standards. Throughout her career, she has released several standalone tracks, including collaborations with artists like Christian Bautista and Leroy Sanchez. One of her well-known later singles, Stronger Together, was released during the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
Television appearances and performances
Beyond her own music, she has appeared in television productions. She guest-starred on the Fox series Glee during the 2013 season. She played a character named Frida Romero, a student from a rival singing group. She performed songs like Clarity and Wings on the show.
She has also performed at various sporting and charity events. For example, she sang the national anthem before a San Diego Chargers game against the New York Jets in 2008. She performed at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in North Carolina. Later in her career, she returned to the America's Got Talent franchise.
