Biography
Who is Joan Manuel Serrat?
Early life and background
Joan Manuel Serrat was born on December 27, 1943, in the Poble-sec neighborhood of Barcelona, Spain. His father was a Catalan anarchist and his working-class family environment heavily influenced his early perspective. Growing up in post-civil war Catalonia provided the thematic foundation for many of his future musical compositions.
He first became involved with music at the age of 17 after acquiring his initial guitar. During the early 1960s, he performed with classmates in a local pop band covering translated songs before launching his professional path in the mid-1960s.
Rise to musical fame
In 1965, Joan appeared on a radio show hosted by Salvador Escamilla, which helped him secure a record deal with the local label Edigsa. He joined the Els Setze Jutges group, defending the Catalan language during Francoist Spain. His early recordings included the EP Una guitarra and the release Ara que tinc vint anys.
His reputation expanded significantly when he released an album featuring poems by Antonio Machado. This project brought him widespread recognition across Spain and Latin America. The release of the Mediterraneo LP further secured his international status as a major musical figure.
Exile and return
In late 1974, Joan faced exile in Mexico due to his public condemnation of capital punishment under the Franco regime. He was able to return to his homeland following the death of Franco in November 1975. By 1976, he expanded his touring reach with performances in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York.
Over the decades, he continued to release albums, tour internationally, and receive numerous cultural honors from the Spanish government and various musical associations. He also ventured into other projects, including becoming a part owner of the Mas Perinet winery.
