Who is Joely Richardson?
Early life and education
Joely Richardson Kim Richardson was born in Marylebone, United Kingdom, into a prominent theatrical family. Her mother is actress Vanessa Redgrave and her father was director Tony Richardson. She grew up alongside her sister Natasha Richardson.
As a child, she appeared as an extra in the film The Charge of the Light Brigade. She attended St Paul's Girls' School before moving to the United States to study at the Harry Hopman Tennis School and later graduating from the Thacher School in California. She then returned to London to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, completing her studies in 1985.
Acting career highlights
Initially considering a career as a professional tennis player, Joely soon turned to acting. Her early screen appearances included a role in her mother's film Wetherby and a part in Peter Greenaway's Drowning by Numbers. She also appeared in episodes of Poirot and Jim Henson's The Storyteller.
She portrayed Princess Anna in the comedy film King Ralph and later appeared in 101 Dalmatians alongside Glenn Close. Her career expanded with roles in science fiction film Event Horizon and the historical drama The Patriot with Mel Gibson.
Television success
Joely achieved major television success when she took on the role of Julia McNamara in the FX drama series Nip/Tuck, appearing in episodes from 2003 to 2010. Her mother, Vanessa Redgrave, also guest-starred in the series as her character's mother.
Later television projects included playing Katherine Parr in the historical series The Tudors and appearing in the Netflix adaptation of The Sandman. She also took on roles in television films and series such as Wallis & Edward and Titanic: Blood and Steel.

Joely was married to film producer Tim Bevan from 1992 until their divorce in 2001. The couple share a daughter named Daisy Bevan. She has also been involved with charity work, serving as an ambassador for organizations such as The Children's Trust and Save the Children.
