Who is John Noble?
Early Life and Education
John Noble was born on August 20, 1948, in Port Pirie, Australia. He completed his education at Rostrevor College in his home country. Before achieving global recognition on screen, he spent many years working in Australian theater.
During the 1970s and 1980s, John built a strong foundation as a stage performer. He served as an artistic director for the Stage Company of South Australia for a decade. He also held leadership roles as a trustee of the Adelaide Festival Centre and chairman of the Adelaide Festival of the Arts.
Rise to International Fame
At age 40, John made his film debut in the horror movie The Dreaming. He later became much better known to international audiences after playing Denethor in Peter Jackson's fantasy trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. His portrayal of the Steward of Gondor brought him widespread attention.
Following his success in fantasy films, John landed a prominent television role as eccentric scientist Walter Bishop in the Fox science fiction series Fringe. He starred in the show for five seasons, earning critical praise and awards for his performance.
Television and Voice Acting
John continued taking on well-known television roles throughout his career. He appeared in the supernatural drama Sleepy Hollow, the police procedural Elementary as Morland Holmes, and the Apple TV+ series Severance. He also played Russian Consul Anatoly Markov in the sixth season of the action series 24.
In addition to live-action work, John is well known for his deep voice in animated projects and video games. He voiced villains such as Leland Monroe in L.A. Noire, Unicron in Transformers Prime, and the Scarecrow in Batman: Arkham Knight.
Personal Life and Family
John is married to Penny Noble, and the couple has three children together. One of their children is actress Samantha Noble, continuing the family tradition in the entertainment industry. The family divides their time between residences in New York City and Sydney, Australia.
Away from acting, John maintains diverse personal interests. He studies theoretical physics and enjoys music, painting, and narration. In 2012, he was diagnosed with osteoporosis and subsequently established a charity called Noble Bones to help raise awareness of the condition.
