Biography
Who is Johnny Marr?
Early life and real name
John Martin Maher was born on October 31, 1963, at Saint Mary's Hospital in Manchester, United Kingdom. He grew up in Manchester with his family, who were Irish emigrants from County Kildare. During his youth, he attended local schools including St Aloysius Primary School and St Augustine's Catholic Grammar School. Alongside his early interest in music, he had strong aspirations to play professional football and even had trials with Manchester City's youth team.
As a teenager, he began spelling his surname as Marr to simplify pronunciation and avoid confusion with another musician. He taught himself to play the guitar using records and a chord dictionary without formal lessons. By the age of 13, he had formed his first band, the Paris Valentinos, alongside Andy Rourke. He later enrolled at Wythenshawe College, where he served as President of the Student Union before focusing entirely on his musical career.
Rise to fame with the Smiths
In 1982, Johnny Marr teamed up with singer Steven Morrissey to form the Smiths, recruiting Andy Rourke on bass and Mike Joyce on drums. The group signed with Rough Trade Records and released their debut single, Hand in Glove, in May 1983. Their distinct jangle pop guitar style quickly helped them achieve commercial success and critical acclaim in the United Kingdom and beyond. Their second album, Meat Is Murder, reached number one on the UK charts.
Despite their rapid success, internal tensions and personal differences began to strain the band. Johnny Marr left the group in July 1987, and the band officially split up prior to the release of their final studio album, Strangeways, Here We Come. Years later, in 1996, drummer Mike Joyce took Marr and Morrissey to court over a royalty dispute, resulting in a ruling in favor of Joyce.
Solo career and collaborations
Following the breakup of the Smiths, Johnny Marr started on a diverse career performing with numerous other bands and working as a productive session musician. He became a member of groups such as the Pretenders, the The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, and the Cribs. He also collaborated with a wide range of prominent artists, including Bryan Ferry, Talking Heads, Pet Shop Boys, Blondie, and Billie Eilish.
He eventually launched a solo career, releasing his debut solo album, The Messenger, in 2013. This was followed by several more studio releases, including Playland, Call the Comet, Fever Dreams Pts 1–4, and The Age of Everything. In 2016, he published his autobiography, titled Set the Boy Free, detailing his decades-long path in the music industry.
Family and personal life
Johnny Marr is connected to the music industry through his family as well, sharing a son named Nile Marr, who also pursued a career in music. His contributions to rock music earned him widespread recognition, including being honored with the Godlike Genius award by NME in 2013.
