Biography
Who is Jonny Greenwood?
Early life and education
Jonny Greenwood was born in Oxford, England, on November 5, 1971. His father served in the British Army as an expert in bomb disposal. Growing up, the family did not focus heavily on music, though he received a recorder at age four or five. He later joined the Thames Vale youth orchestra where he played the viola. This experience proved formative as it was his first time playing with peers who maintained consistent pitch.
During his teenage years at the private Abingdon School, he spent significant time in the music department. He also experimented with early computer programming, utilizing basic code to create simple games. He found the process of working close to the machine's core deeply engaging.
Formation of Radiohead
While attending school in Abingdon, he joined a band called On a Friday with his brother Colin and classmates Thom Yorke, Ed O'Brien, and Philip Selway. As the youngest member, he initially played harmonica and keyboards. He famously practiced with his keyboard turned off for months so the band would not hear him, eventually introducing chords as he gained confidence.
The group eventually renamed themselves Radiohead and signed a contract with EMI. This led to the release of their debut album, Pablo Honey, in 1993. The success of the single Creep brought the band widespread attention, specifically for his aggressive guitar style. Over the following decades, the band achieved big commercial success, selling over 30 million albums and earning an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. He continued to evolve his role within the band, acting as an arranger who helped transform early demos into complex songs.
Musical style and instrumentation
Beyond standard rock instrumentation, he is a dedicated multi-instrumentalist. He is well-known for his proficiency with the ondes Martenot, a rare early electronic instrument that produces unique, theremin-like sounds. He often uses this instrument to build complex arrangements, including those found on the Kid A and Amnesiac albums.
His approach involves deep experimentation with electronic techniques like looping, sampling, and programming. He even writes custom software to manipulate sounds. His classical training distinguishes him within the band, allowing him to compose detailed string arrangements for the London Contemporary Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra. He has also branched out into other projects, such as forming the band the Smile in 2021 with Thom Yorke and drummer Tom Skinner.
Film scoring career
His career as a film composer began in 2003 with the soundtrack for the documentary Bodysong. This project showed his ability to blend jazz, classical elements, and electronic textures. He gained significant acclaim for his frequent collaborations with director Paul Thomas Anderson, starting with the 2007 film There Will Be Blood. His work on this project established him as a premier film composer.
He later received an Academy Award nomination for his score for Anderson's 2018 film Phantom Thread. He earned another nomination for his work on Jane Campion's 2021 film The Power of the Dog. He continues to score major films, including projects for director Lynne Ramsay like We Need to Talk About Kevin. His contributions to film music are widely recognized for their distinct, often unsettling and atmospheric quality.
