Biography
Who is Joost Klein?
Early Years and Background
Joost Klein was born in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, on November 10, 1997. He spent his childhood in the nearby village of Britsum. By the age of thirteen, he experienced the loss of his father to cancer, and his mother passed away due to cardiac arrest the following year. Following these tragedies, his older siblings took responsibility for his care.
In 2010, while still young, he established a presence online by launching a YouTube channel titled EenhoornJoost. During his teenage years, he made the decision not to finish his secondary school education, choosing instead to focus on his creative pursuits and online content creation.
Rise to Music Stardom
Before fully committing to his musical career, Joost published diverse videos ranging from short sketches to mini-documentaries. He released his first EP, Dakloos, in 2016. His track Bitches, produced by Mick Spek, was a major milestone as it gained over one million views on YouTube. After a brief association with the label TopNotch, he established his own independent label called Albino Sports.
His discography grew steadily with projects like the mixtape Scandinavian Boy and the studio album M van Marketing, which he created alongside rapper Donnie. To celebrate this release, the pair hosted a concert at the Royal Theater Carré in Amsterdam. He continued to release successful albums, including 1983, Joost Klein 7, and the province-inspired Fryslân. These projects showed his ability to collaborate with various producers and artists while maintaining his distinctive artistic voice.
Eurovision and International Projects
The artist achieved significant international traction with the single Friesenjung, a collaboration with Ski Aggu and Otto Waalkes that reached the top of the German charts. This success paved the way for his selection by broadcaster AVROTROS to represent the Netherlands in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. His entry, Europapa, became a major hit, topping the Dutch Single Top 100. Despite his qualification for the final, he was disqualified by the European Broadcasting Union following an incident involving a camera operator. Swedish authorities later investigated the situation and closed the case without finding evidence of criminal conduct.
Following the Eurovision experience, he remained active in the industry. He joined the tenth season of The Voice van Vlaanderen as a coach. In early 2025, he started on the Europapa Tour, performing in seventeen cities across Europe and North America. He later launched a world tour that included a show at the Ziggo Dome and concluded in Perth in December 2026. His later work includes albums such as Kleinkunst and collaborative projects like the EP Boyband.
