Who is Simone Simons?
Early life and music studies
Simone Simons was born in the town of Hoensbroek in the Netherlands, located near the borders with Germany and Belgium. She has a younger sister named Janneke, who arrived on the singer's second birthday. During her childhood, she pursued several musical interests. At age ten, she began taking vocal lessons and also spent two years learning to play the flute. By age twelve, she enrolled in a music school to further develop her abilities.
As a teenager, her musical path shifted after she listened to the second album by the band Nightwish. Inspired by hearing operatic vocals for the first time, she stopped taking pop and jazz lessons at age fifteen and began studying as a lyrical singer. She developed a strong interest in classical music and composition. Before joining her main band, she briefly sang in a choir and participated in rehearsals for a black metal group.
Joining Epica and rise to fame
In early 2002, musician Mark Jansen departed from the band After Forever and started a new musical project initially called Sahara Dust. The group sought a frontwoman to deliver classical and symphonic metal styles. After briefly considering another singer, they brought in Simone as the lead vocalist. She joined the ensemble at the age of seventeen, quickly becoming a central figure in its lineup.
With her as the lead vocalist, the band recorded numerous studio albums and started on worldwide tours. Over the years, the group released several successful records, including a studio album titled Vermillion. Her distinct vocal style helped define the sound of the band, attracting a large international following within the symphonic and gothic metal scenes.
Collaborations and lifestyle blogging
Throughout her singing career, Simone has lent her vocals to many other prominent bands and musical projects. She has collaborated with artists such as Kamelot, Leaves' Eyes, Primal Fear, Ayreon, and Angra. Her guest appearances span numerous albums and live recordings, including tracks with Kamelot, Sons of Seasons, and MaYaN. She also appeared in the film documentary Soaring Highs and Brutal Lows: The Voices of Women in Metal.

Family and personal life
Simone resides in Stuttgart, Germany, with her family. She is married to Oliver Palotai, a keyboard player for the band Kamelot. The couple has a son named Vincent Palotai, who was born on October 2 in 2013. Later that year, she announced her marriage to Palotai on her personal blog. In the past, she had a relationship with Mark Jansen, which ended in 2005.
During her time with her band, she faced health challenges that impacted her schedule. In early 2008, she suffered from recurrent infections that forced the group to cancel several live shows. After a period of recovery and temporary replacements on tour, she returned to the stage to perform live again in May of that same year.
