James Eugene Carrey was born in Newmarket, Ontario, on January 17, 1962. His parents, Kathleen and Percy Carrey, raised him in the Catholic faith alongside his three older siblings. His mother worked as a homemaker while his father balanced careers as a musician and an accountant. The family history includes French Canadian roots through his father, as well as Irish and Scottish heritage from his mother. His ancestors originally used the surname Carré before it was changed.
