Who is Josh Holloway?
Early life and education
Josh Holloway was born in San Jose, California, in 1969. He was the second of four boys, born to a nurse and a surveyor. When Josh was two years old, his family relocated to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia. He spent his childhood growing up in Free Home, Georgia.
He attended Cherokee High School in Canton, Georgia, and finished his studies there in 1987. During his youth, Josh developed a strong interest in movies. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Georgia. However, he left the institution after completing only one quarter due to financial limitations.
Modeling and early acting
After leaving college, Josh moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. He initially found success working as a runway and print model. During this time, he represented major fashion brands such as Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and Dolce & Gabbana.
In 1993, he appeared in the music video for the Aerosmith song Cryin, where he played a thief. His transition into professional acting roles began in 1999 with a small part in the television show Angel. He subsequently appeared in several independent films, including Mi Amigo, Moving August, and Cold Heart. Before his major breakthrough, Josh also secured guest roles on various television programs like Walker, Texas Ranger, NCIS, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
Rise to fame and television career
Josh Holloway achieved mainstream fame after being cast as James Sawyer Ford in the hit series Lost, which aired from 2004 to 2010. His work on the show earned him a Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television in 2010. Following his time on the island, he continued to work steadily in television.
He starred as a cybercrime agent in the CBS show Intelligence in 2014. From 2016 to 2018, he played Will Bowman in the science fiction series Colony. Also, he held a recurring role in the Paramount Network western series Yellowstone during its third and fourth seasons. In 2025, he appeared in the Max crime series Duster as the character Jim Ellis.
Personal life and other projects
In 2004, Josh married his long-time girlfriend, Yessica Kumala, following the filming of the Lost pilot in Oahu, Hawaii. The couple has two children together. Beyond his acting work, he has ventured into other creative fields. In 2007, he became a brand representative for Davidoff's fragrance Cool Water.
He has also contributed to the video game industry. He played the role of an intelligence officer named Ajay in Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Recently, he signed on to both star in and produce a feature film adaptation of the Louis L’Amour novel titled Flint. He also stars as a fighter pilot in the live-action miniseries Hour Zero, which serves as a prequel to the game Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.
