Early life and education

Junya Itō was born in Yokosuka, Japan. He spent four years studying at Kanagawa University. After his studies, he joined Ventforet Kofu as a Special Designated Player. He later signed a professional contract with the J1 League side.

Club career in Japan and Belgium

Kashiwa Reysol signed Junya in January 2016. He played for the Chiba-based team until January 31, 2019. He then moved to the Belgian Pro League team Genk on a one-year loan. On September 18, 2019, he started in a Champions League match against Red Bull Salzburg. Junya Itō signed a permanent three-year contract with Genk on March 30, 2020.

During his time there, he won the Belgian First Division A in 2018-19. He also won the Belgian Super Cup in 2019 and the Belgian Cup in 2020-21. He earned a spot on the 2020-21 Team of the Season for the Belgian First Division A. He was the top assist provider and won Goal of the Season for the 2021-22 campaign.
