Who is Kabir Bedi?
Early life and education
Kabir Bedi was born on January 16, 1946, in Lahore, which was then part of British India. His father, Baba Pyare Lal Singh Bedi, was an author and philosopher who descended from Guru Nanak. His mother, Freda Bedi, was an English woman from Derby who became a famous Tibetan Buddhist monk.
For his schooling, he attended several institutions including Sherwood College in Nainital. He also studied at Delhi Public School Mathura Road and St. Stephen's College in Delhi. During his childhood in Myanmar, he was ordained as a Buddhist monk at age 10.
Career highlights
The actor began his professional path in Indian theatre before moving into Hindi cinema. He became one of the first Indian performers to find success in Hollywood and across Europe. In the 1980s, he played the character Gobinda in the James Bond film Octopussy. He is also widely recognized for his portrayal of the pirate Sandokan in an Italian television miniseries.
His filmography includes over 60 Indian movies, such as Khoon Bhari Maang and Main Hoon Na. He played Emperor Shah Jahan in the historical epic Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story. On television, he appeared in American shows like Dynasty and Magnum, P.I. He also hosted his own interview series called Director's Cut on Indian television.
Awards and memberships
In 2010, the President of the Italian Republic knighted him. He holds the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. This honor is the highest civilian distinction in Italy. He also received an honorary degree from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in India.
Kabir Bedi has been a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1982. He is also a member of the Screen Actors Guild. Throughout his career, he has received many different awards for his work in film and advertising across various countries.

He has been married four times during his life. His children include Pooja Bedi and Adam Bedi. His son Adam is an international model who debuted in the film Hello? Kaun Hai!. He was previously married to Nikki Bedi, Protima Bedi, and Susan Humphreys.
Kabir lives in Mumbai, India. Beyond acting, he serves as a brand ambassador for several organizations. He supports Sightsavers and is an official ambassador for the Burma Campaign UK. He also works with Rotary International South Asia for their literacy and teaching programs.
