Early life and background
Born Henry St. Claire Fredericks Jr. In New York City on May 17, 1942, he grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. His parents were musically inclined, with his mother singing in a church choir and his father working as a jazz arranger. The family home often welcomed visiting musicians from Africa and the Caribbean, which provided early exposure to diverse musical traditions. He studied various instruments during his youth, including classical piano, clarinet, trombone, and harmonica.
His father died in a construction accident when he was eleven years old. After his mother remarried, his stepfather owned a guitar, which he began playing as a teenager. While in high school, he sang in a vocal group. Although he initially considered a career in farming and studied animal husbandry at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he ultimately committed to his music career.
Musical career and major works
He adopted his stage name while attending college and began performing in groups like the rhythm and blues band Taj Mahal & The Elektras. After moving to California in 1964, he formed the band Rising Sons with Ry Cooder and others. The group signed with Columbia Records, though they released limited material before disbanding. He continued his career as a solo artist, releasing self-titled albums and successful records like The Natch'l Blues in 1968.
Throughout the 1970s, his work expanded to include influences from reggae, jazz, and West Indian music. He composed the score for the 1972 movie Sounder and also appeared as an actor in the film. Later, he signed with Warner Bros. Records and provided the score for the film Brothers. In the 1980s, he relocated to Hawaii and established the Hula Blues Band, which toured frequently.
Personal life and family
He has a daughter named Aya de Leon. His interest in agriculture, which developed during his teenage years while working on a farm, remained a part of his life. He frequently performs at Farm Aid concerts to support family farming initiatives. He has lived in Berkeley, California, since the late 1990s or early 2000s.
