Early life and background
Nikki Reed: Nicole Houston Reed was born on May 17, 1988, in West Los Angeles, United States. Her mother is Cherokee-Italian and her father is a set designer who is Jewish. She grew up in the Los Angeles area and experienced a complicated home life. Her parents divorced when she was two years old, and her mother raised her. At age fourteen, she moved out of her mother's house and began living independently in various apartments around Los Angeles.
Breakthrough in film
Catherine Hardwicke, a friend of her mother and ex-girlfriend of her father, invited Nikki to work on a script when she expressed an interest in acting. Together they wrote the semi-autobiographical drama film Thirteen in just six days. Producers cast Nikki because they struggled to find a young actress willing to take on the uncomfortable role. The movie premiered in 2003 to positive reviews, earning Nikki recognition as both a screenwriter and an actress. She won the Best Breakthrough Performance award at the Young Hollywood Awards and received a nomination for Best First Screenplay at the 19th Independent Spirit Awards.
The Twilight Saga and later career
In February 2008, it was announced that Nikki would portray the vampire character Rosalie Hale in the film adaptation of Twilight. The movie became an international success and launched a series of films spanning from 2008 to 2012 in which she reprised her role. Alongside her work in Twilight, she joined the casts of several other films including Catch.44, Downers Grove, Pawn, and Balls Out. In 2019, she made an appearance in an episode of the television show Dollface.

Nikki met singer-songwriter Paul McDonald at a film premiere in March 2011. They began dating, confirmed their engagement in June of that same year, and married in October 2011 in Malibu, California. The couple separated due to work obligations and finalized their divorce in January 2015. Shortly after her separation, she began dating actor Ian Somerhalder. They confirmed their engagement in February 2015 and married in April 2015 in Malibu, California. The couple shares two children, a daughter born in 2017 and a son born in 2023.
