Who is Kal Penn?
Early life and education
Kal Penn was born Kalpen Suresh Modi in Montclair, New Jersey. His parents, Asmita Bhatt and Suresh Modi, immigrated from Gujarat, India. His mother worked as a fragrance evaluator for a perfume company, while his father served as an engineer. During his childhood, he frequently traveled to Gujarat for vacations and learned to speak some Hindi and Gujarati. He has mentioned that the stories involving his grandparents participating in the Indian independence movement alongside Mahatma Gandhi influenced his interest in political engagement.
For his schooling, he attended Marlboro Middle School where he played the baritone saxophone in the jazz band. He later attended Freehold Township High School before moving to Howell High School, where he participated in the Fine and Performing Arts Center magnet program for acting. He was active in theater productions and competed on the speech and debate team. He eventually enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he completed a double major in sociology and film, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2000.
Acting career beginnings
His film career started in 1998 with the role in Express: Aisle to Glory. He adopted the professional name Kal Penn as an experiment to see if an anglicized name would lead to more auditions in an industry he felt was white-dominated. He noted that his callbacks increased significantly after he made the change, though he still prefers his birth name for personal use. Throughout the early 2000s, he appeared in various projects such as Van Wilder, Malibu's Most Wanted, and A Lot Like Love.
In 2007, he took a role as a terrorist in the television series 24. He later expressed hesitation about the part due to concerns about racial profiling, though he accepted the opportunity. That same year, he won the Asian Excellence Award for Outstanding Actor for his work in the film The Namesake. He joined the medical drama House in the fall of 2007, portraying the character Lawrence Kutner. He remained on the show for several seasons until he left to pursue a position in the Obama administration.
Political work and later roles
In April 2009, he began working as an associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement. His primary responsibility involved serving as a liaison for outreach to the Asian Pacific American and arts communities. This job required him to leave the cast of House. He departed the White House briefly in 2010 to film the third installment of the Harold and Kumar franchise, A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas, before returning to his government duties.
He eventually left his White House position in 2011 to accept a role on the show How I Met Your Mother. Between 2016 and 2019, he portrayed Seth Wright in the political drama Designated Survivor, where he also functioned as a political consultant.
