Who is Kieran Culkin?
Early life and background
Kieran Culkin Kyle Culkin was born on September 30, 1982, in New York City. He was the fourth of seven children born to Christopher Kit Culkin and Patricia Brentrup. His father worked as a stage actor, while his mother was a road traffic controller. Kieran grew up in a Catholic household with his siblings, Shane, Dakota, Macaulay, Quinn, Christian, and Rory. He also had an older half-sister named Jennifer Adamson.
The family lived in a small apartment in Yorkville during his early years. Financial struggles were a constant reality for the household. Because his father served as a sacristan at St. Joseph's Church, Kieran attended the local Catholic school without paying tuition until the third grade. He later enrolled at the Professional Children's School to study film, television, and theater, though he eventually left during his senior year.
Starting a career in acting
Kieran began his path as a performer at the age of two. His parents offered him and his siblings for various roles after a stage manager at the Light Opera of Manhattan mentioned they needed children for productions. He started auditioning for jobs with his older siblings when he was six years old. His first professional gig involved a television commercial about learning disabilities, where he attempted method acting under a strict director.
At age seven, he made his feature film debut as Fuller McCallister in the comedy Home Alone. He appeared alongside his older brother Macaulay in the film. He later reprised this role in the sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Throughout the 1990s, he appeared in several movies including Father of the Bride and its sequel, Father of the Bride Part II, as well as the film The Mighty.

In 2002, Kieran starred in the film Igby Goes Down as Jason Igby Slocumb Jr. This role earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy and a win for the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Young Actor. The success of the film led him to take a break from the screen to determine if he wanted to continue acting as a career.
He returned to film later in projects like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. On television, he gained significant acclaim for portraying Roman Roy in the HBO drama series Succession, which aired from 2018 to 2023. His voice acting credits also include roles in Solar Opposites and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

Kieran has maintained a consistent presence in theater throughout his career. He starred in the West End and Broadway productions of Kenneth Lonergan's play This Is Our Youth. He also took on the role of Richard Roma in a 2025 Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet.
