Early life and background
Lee Hyori was born on February 19, 1979, in Cheongju, South Korea, as the youngest of three daughters. She grew up in a small barbershop and faced financial difficulties during her youth. While taking sticker pictures with friends, she was scouted by an agency manager and eventually became a trainee under SM Entertainment.
She prepared extensively for a pop music career before joining the girl group Fin.K.L as its final member and leader. Her path from humble beginnings to a prominent trainee marked the start of her rise in the South Korean entertainment industry.
Fin.K.L and group success
Lee began her official music career in January 1998 as a member and the leader of the pop girl group Fin.K.L. The group officially debuted on May 22, 1998, with their first single titled Blue Rain. Their second release, To My Boyfriend, quickly became their first major number one hit on the music charts.
Fin.K.L grew to become one of the most popular and successful South Korean pop groups of all time, frequently rivaling fellow girl group S.E.S. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. Lee served as the eldest and leading member throughout the group's active years.
Solo career and Stylish album
In August 2003, Lee made her solo music debut with the release of her studio album Stylish.... The lead single from the album, titled 10 Minutes, became one of her signature hits and achieved widespread recognition across South Korea.
The big success of her solo work led to the media term Hyori Syndrome, and 2003 was frequently dubbed the year of Hyori by domestic journalists. She won numerous grand prizes, known as daesangs, at major year-end award ceremonies for her music.
Television work and later projects
On television, Lee established herself as a popular variety show personality and host. She co-hosted programs such as Happy Together and appeared as a main cast member during the first season of the variety show Family Outing, earning the nickname Nation's Fairy.
She later participated in special musical project groups, including the Refund Sisters and SSAK3 in 2020. Throughout her career, she has released multiple studio albums and expanded her presence into acting and commercial endorsements.
