Lena Dunham was born in New York City, United States, to parents Carroll Dunham and Laurie Simmons. Her father worked as a painter, while her mother pursued a career as an artist and photographer. She grew up alongside her sibling, Cyrus Dunham, spending time in Brooklyn and Salisbury, Connecticut.
For her education, Lena attended Friends Seminary before transferring to Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn. She later studied at The New School for a single year before enrolling at Oberlin College. She successfully completed her degree in creative writing at Oberlin College, graduating in the year 2008.
