Who is Li Bingbing?
Early life and education
Li Bingbing was born in Wuchang, Heilongjiang. Her parents came from Taigu in Shanxi Province. She grew up in a family of workers. She has a younger sister named Li Xue. At 16, she attended Jixi Normal School. This school is now known as Heilongjiang University of Technology. After graduating in 1992, she worked as a music teacher in Harbin for one year. In 1993, she entered the Shanghai Theatre Academy to study acting.
Rise to fame in China
Li earned praise for her part in the 1999 film Seventeen Years. She won a prize for best acting during the 13th festival in Singapore. The movie was banned in China. In 2001, she appeared in the TV show Young Justice Bao. She then acted in wuxia series like Eight Heroes and Taiji Prodigy. These roles led people to call her an action actress.
In 2004, she starred in the romantic comedy Waiting Alone. This performance earned her a Golden Rooster Award nomination for best actress. She also acted in A World Without Thieves. Li entered English films in 2011 with Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. This movie was based on a novel by Lisa See. She played Ada Wong in Resident Evil: Retribution that same year. She also appeared in the film 400 Boys. In 2013, Variety called her the Asian Star of the Year. She received the East-West Talent Award at the 4th Annual US-China Film Summit.
In 2014, she featured in Transformers: Age of Extinction. She played a role in the 3D thriller Nest. This movie was released in January 2018. In 2018, she starred alongside Jason Statham in The Meg. This shark film was based on a 1997 novel by Steve Alten. Li also starred in the 2010 mystery film Detective Dee.
Philanthropy and other work
Li founded a studio called Hesong Entertainment in 2010. She co-produced the movie 1911 with Jackie Chan. This film came out in September 2011. She is a member of the China Zhi Gong Party. Her sister Li Xue serves as her manager. Li also has a godfather named Wang Lin who is a psi practitioner.
She created a charity called L.O.V.E to promote green living. Li co-founded the One Million-Tree Forest project in Gansu Province. This effort helps local residents earn more money. She is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNEP. She also served as a Charity Ambassador for the Shanghai World Expo. The World Wildlife Fund called her the most influential global ambassador.
