Who is Lim Yoona?
Early life and education
Lim Yoona was born in Daerim-dong, Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul, South Korea. Her family includes her father and an older sister who is five years her senior. She began her path toward stardom after being cast in an SM Saturday Open Casting Audition in 2002.
She spent five years training in dance, singing, and acting before her official debut. Lim attended Daeyoung High School and graduated in 2009. Later, she studied theater at Dongguk University, where she graduated in February 2015 after receiving a lifetime achievement award. In 2014, she served as an ambassador for the university.
How Lim became famous
Lim made her debut in August 2007 as the center of the girl group Girls' Generation. The group became one of the most successful and widely known musical acts in South Korea. Before her group activities took off, she appeared in music videos such as the 2004 TVXQ song Magic Castle.
Her acting career saw a major breakthrough in 2008 with the drama You Are My Destiny. Playing the character Jang Sae-byuk, she earned Best New Actress awards at both the KBS Drama Awards and the 45th Baeksang Arts Awards. Her leading role in the disaster film Exit attracted over nine million viewers.
