Who is Linda Perry?
Early life
Linda Perry was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on April 15, 1965. Her father, Alfred Xavier Perry, worked as an engineer and musician of Portuguese descent. Her mother, Marluce Martins Perry, worked as a designer and model of Brazilian descent. Growing up in a musical household, Linda developed an early interest in music.
She spent her teenage years living in San Diego before she decided to move north. In 1986, at the age of 21, Linda relocated to San Francisco to pursue her creative interests.
4 Non Blondes and solo work
In San Francisco, Linda lived in a small room and performed her own songs on city streets and in local clubs. In mid-1989, she joined the band 4 Non Blondes as their lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist. The group signed with Interscope Records in July 1991.
The band released their only album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More!, in 1992. The album featured the hit single "What's Up?," which Linda wrote. The track reached number one in ten countries. The band disbanded in late 1994 during the recording of their second album due to creative disagreements.
Songwriting and production
Linda taught herself to use modern recording equipment, samplers, and synthesizers. She wrote the song "Get the Party Started," which caught the attention of singer Pink. Pink recorded the track for her second album, Missundaztood, and it became a big worldwide hit.
Following that success, Linda wrote and produced the song "Beautiful" for Christina Aguilera. The track brought further acclaim and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Song of the Year. Linda also launched her own record label, Custard Records, to support new musical acts.
