Early life and education
Linus Gabriel Sebastian was born on August 20, 1986, and spent his childhood on a hobby farm in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. He received his name in honor of Linus Pauling, a famous American chemist who won Nobel Prizes. During his younger years, he received a diagnosis of ADHD. Before establishing himself in the technology industry, he gained experience working as a house painter for Student Works. He eventually left that trade after struggling with suspected depression.
Career at NCIX and founding Linus Media Group
Linus Sebastian began his career at the Canadian computer store NCIX, where he held various positions such as product manager and sales representative. The company asked him to host their technology YouTube channel, NCIX Tech Tips, which served as a platform to demonstrate various products. Working with a borrowed camera and limited resources, he released the first video for the channel on July 24, 2007. Eventually, rising production costs and brand demands led him to launch a separate channel called Linus Tech Tips in November 2008.

In August 2023, the YouTube channel Gamers Nexus published a report questioning the ethics and accuracy of how Linus Media Group handled a prototype water block from Billet Labs. The report noted that the company installed the component on an incorrect GPU model and later sold the item in a charity auction instead of returning it. Linus Sebastian characterized the sale as a miscommunication. The company paused production for 10 days to investigate, and he later stated that while they did not have a systematic accuracy issue, they would work to improve internal processes.
