Who is Lois Chiles?
Early life and real name
Lois Chiles Cleveland Chiles was born in Houston, Texas, on April 15, 1947. Her parents were Marion Clay Chiles and Barbara Wayne Kirkland Chiles, and she grew up in Alice, Texas. Her family included brothers Clay Kirkland Chiles and William Edmonds Chiles.
She attended Alice High School before studying at the University of Texas at Austin and Finch College in New York City. While living in New York, a Glamour magazine editor discovered her for the cover of their college issue, launching her modeling career.
Modeling and acting career
After signing with Wilhelmina Models in New York and Elite Models in Paris, she worked as a fashion model in the early 1970s. She transitioned to acting and appeared in films such as Together for Days and The Way We Were alongside Robert Redford.
She played Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby in 1974 and appeared in Death on the Nile in 1978. Her most famous film role came in 1979 as NASA scientist and Bond girl Dr. Holly Goodhead in Moonraker opposite Roger Moore.
Later television and film work
Following a temporary break from acting due to family loss, she joined the cast of the television series Dallas during the 1982 and 1983 season as Holly Harwood. Her later screen credits include Sweet Liberty, Broadcast News, and Creepshow 2.
She also appeared in Wish Upon a Star, Speed 2: Cruise Control, and episodes of Murder, She Wrote and The Nanny. In 2005, she guest starred in two episodes of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Personal life and marriage
During her life in New York and Los Angeles, she befriended figures such as Tennessee Williams and Andy Warhol. She dated musician Don Henley and later William S. Paley before marrying money manager Richard Gilder in 2005.
She and her husband served as honorary co-chairs of Northfield Mount Hermon school, which named the Chiles Theater after her. Gilder passed away in 2020, and she has spent her later years focusing on art between Houston and New York.
