Who is Loris Karius?
Early life and youth football
Loris Karius was born in Biberach an der Riß, Germany, to parents Christine and Harald Karius. While his father initially hoped he would pursue motocross, his grandfather Karl encouraged him to focus on association football instead. During his childhood, he attended the Pestalozzi-Gymnasium Biberach before moving to England. His early training took place at local clubs including SG Mettenberg and SSV Ulm. He eventually joined the youth ranks at VfB Stuttgart, where he developed his skills as a young goalkeeper.
Mainz 05 and Bundesliga breakthrough
In August 2011, Karius returned to Germany on loan to join Mainz 05. He initially played for their reserve side, Mainz 05 II, in the Regionalliga. The transfer became permanent on January 11, 2012, when he signed a contract scheduled to last until 2015. His official Bundesliga debut occurred on December 1, 2012, against Hannover 96. He entered the match as a substitute after the primary goalkeeper, Christian Wetklo, received a red card. At the time, this made him the youngest goalkeeper to ever play in the Bundesliga for Mainz.
Liverpool career and Champions League final
Loris Karius joined Liverpool on May 24, 2016, signing a five-year deal for a fee of 4.75 million pounds. He made his debut in a League Cup victory over Derby County on September 20, 2016. By late October, manager Jürgen Klopp confirmed that Karius was the team's first-choice keeper. His tenure was marked by both high points and difficult challenges. During a period of inconsistent form in December 2016, he was temporarily removed from the starting lineup to regain his confidence.
Loans and professional career moves
Following Liverpool's acquisition of Alisson in 2018, Karius moved on loan to the Turkish club Beşiktaş for two years. He played for the team until May 2020, when he terminated his contract citing issues with unpaid wages. Shortly after, he joined the German side Union Berlin for the 2020-21 season on another loan. He made his debut for Union Berlin in a DFB Pokal match against SC Paderborn in December 2020.
