Early life and real name
Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero was born on April 15, 1978, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He grew up as the oldest child of Alfonso Rodríguez and Delia López-Cepero, alongside his siblings Jean and Tatiana. During his childhood, he idolized the popular group Menudo and sang with the San Juan Children's Choir.
When he was ten years old, his family relocated from Puerto Rico to Orlando, Florida. He attended Westridge Middle School and Dr. Phillips High School, where he joined an a cappella group called The Big Guys. In 1995, he enrolled at the Florida State University School of Music on a full scholarship before leaving to pursue his music career.
How Luis became famous
Luis Fonsi released his debut studio album, Comenzaré, in 1998 after signing with Universal Music Latin. The record achieved commercial success in Puerto Rico and across multiple Latin American markets. His subsequent albums, including Eterno and Abrazar la vida, further expanded his reach and produced charting singles on the Billboard Latin charts.
He achieved unprecedented international prominence in January 2017 with the release of the single Despacito, featuring Daddy Yankee. A subsequent remix featuring Justin Bieber helped the track tie the record for the longest reigning top song in the history of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The music video also became one of the most viewed videos on YouTube.
