He was raised in the Villa Kennedy Housing Projects neighborhood. His parents are Rosa Rodríguez and Ramón Ayala, who worked as a salsa percussion player. He has a sibling named Melvin Ayala.

Daddy Yankee began appearing on underground mixtapes in the early 1990s, including DJ Playero's Mixtape Playero 34 with the song So Persigueme, No Te Detengas.
