Early life and real name
Born in Oakland, California, Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore entered the world on February 16, 1974. He was raised in Hayward by his mother, Willicia Goines, who served as an ordained Baptist minister. His father, Phillip Gilmore, was a professional dancer who performed on Broadway before passing away in 1994. Mahershala was raised in a Christian household and later attended Mount Eden High School before pursuing higher education in California.
Acting career and education
After completing his undergraduate studies, Mahershala Ali moved to New York to further his training. He enrolled in the New York University Tisch School of the Arts graduate acting program. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in 2000. Shortly after graduating, he began his professional career on television with recurring roles in series such as Crossing Jordan and Threat Matrix. His breakthrough came when he was cast as Richard Tyler in the science fiction drama The 4400, which aired from 2004 to 2007.

Mahershala reached a career peak in 2016 when he played the character Juan in the film Moonlight. This performance earned him his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.
