Who is Mammootty?
Early life and education
Mammootty was born in Chandiroor, India, on September 6, 1951. He grew up in a middle class family as the eldest son of Ismail and Fatima. He spent his early years in the state of Kerala, where he attended local schools for his primary education. His father was involved in rice cultivation and a wholesale garment business.
He pursued higher education at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, and later attended Maharaja's College, Ernakulam. He completed his formal studies by earning a degree from Government Law College, Kozhikode. Before establishing himself as a full-time performer in the film industry, he spent time practicing law in Manjeri.
Film career beginnings
Mammootty began his path in the film industry with uncredited and small supporting parts. He made his screen debut as a junior artiste in the drama film Anubhavangal Paalichakal in 1971. Over the next several years, he took on various minor and supporting characters to build his experience on set.
He transitioned into prominent lead roles during the early 1980s. His performance in the romantic drama Thrishna marked a major turning point in his acting path. Throughout that decade, he starred in numerous successful commercial projects that established his status as a leading man in South Indian cinema.

Mammootty married Sulfath, and the couple shares a family together in India. Their son, Dulquer Salmaan, works as an actor in the film industry. His brother Ibrahim Kutty is also involved in acting.
