Naomie Melanie Harris was born on September 6, 1976, in London, United Kingdom. She grew up in a council flat located in the Finsbury Park area of the city. Her mother, Lisselle Kayla Harris, moved from Jamaica to London as a young child and later worked as a screenwriter for the television show EastEnders. Her father, Brian Clarke, is a fashion designer with roots in Trinidad, Grenada, and Guyana. Her parents ended their relationship before she was born, and her mother later remarried, giving Naomie Harris two younger half-siblings.

Her professional career began at the age of nine with a role in the 1987 television series Simon and the Witch.
