Early life and background
Marija Šestić was born in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on May 5, 1987. She grew up in a musical household with her father, Dušan Šestić, who is also a musician and composed the national anthem of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
From an early age, Marija developed skills as a pianist. She participated in various regional music competitions and festivals during her youth, building a strong foundation for her future career in the music industry.

Throughout her younger years, Marija competed in numerous events and earned recognition for her performances. She secured first place at the Young Talents Festival in Zenica for three consecutive years.
At the St George's Day Festival in Banja Luka, she won third place in 1995 and first place in 1996. Additional honors include a special performance award at Naša radost in Podgorica in 1998, and first place for performance at Zlatno zvonce in Novi Sad in 1999.
She later received the Best Newcomer Award at the Banja Luka international pop music festival in 2003, a first prize for performance at The Golden Star international festival in Bucharest in 2004, and second place at the Banja Luka festival in 2005.

Marija Šestić achieved significant recognition by becoming the first artist from the former Yugoslavia to appear on MTV Europe. She also competed in national selections, placing a respectable fourth at the national final in 2005 with the song In This World.
Her major breakthrough came when she was selected to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, held in Helsinki, Finland. Performing the track Rijeka bez imena, which translates to Nameless river, she earned 106 points and finished in eleventh place out of twenty-four entries.
