Marisa Tomei was born on December 4, 1964, in Brooklyn, United States. She grew up in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn. Her parents are Gary A. Tomei, a trial lawyer, and Adelaide, an English teacher. She has a younger brother named Adam Tomei, who is an actor. Her family is of Italian descent, with ancestors from Tuscany, Calabria, Campania, and Sicily. She was partly raised by her paternal grandparents and grew up in a household that celebrated Italian traditions without being religious.
Early career
Marisa began her television career with a role in the soap opera As the World Turns from 1983 to 1985. She followed this with a main role in the first season of the sitcom A Different World in 1987. Her film debut came in 1984 with a minor role as a waitress in The Flamingo Kid. In 1986, she appeared in the comedy film Playing for Keeps and made her off-Broadway stage debut in Daughters, which earned her a Theatre World Award for outstanding stage debut.
