Who is Markel Susaeta?
Early life and career beginnings
Markel Susaeta was born in Eibar, Spain. He developed his skills within the Athletic Bilbao youth system. He spent time playing for the club's farm team and the B side before moving up to the senior squad.
He made his first appearance for the Athletic Bilbao first team on 2 September 2007. During his debut match against FC Barcelona, he managed to score a goal. In his first La Liga season, he played 29 matches and scored four times.

Markel Susaeta became a staple for the Basque club over many years. On 31 January 2009, he scored a late goal to secure a 3-2 victory against Málaga CF. That season, he helped the team reach the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.
During the 2011-12 season, he scored 13 goals in total. This included five goals during the UEFA Europa League campaign that saw the club reach the final. In September 2016, he set a new club record for the most appearances in European competitions.
He reached a major milestone in January 2019 by playing his 500th competitive match for Athletic. This made him only the fifth player in the history of the club to achieve such a feat. He left the team at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season.
International and later clubs
The Spanish national team called Markel Susaeta up for a friendly match against Panama on 14 November 2012. He scored a goal during that 5-1 victory in Panama City to earn his full cap. He also represented the Basque Country regional football team.
After leaving Spain, he moved to the J1 League to play for Gamba Osaka in September 2019. He later traveled to Australia to join Melbourne City FC in January 2020. He spent a brief period there before the COVID-19 pandemic affected his release.
In November 2020, he signed with Macarthur FC in the Australian top division. He played alongside his former teammate Beñat Etxebarria during this time. Both players retired from professional football at the end of that specific campaign.
