Who is Maxwell?
Early career and Ajax years
Maxwell began his professional path at Cruzeiro in Brazil. In June 2001, he moved to the Netherlands to join AFC Ajax through a five-year contract. He played as a left-back during his time with the Dutch club.
During the 2003-04 season, he played a key role for the Eredivisie champions. This period saw him named the Dutch Footballer of the Year. He also earned the Ajax Player of the Year and the Dutch Golden Shoe during his stay in the Netherlands.
A serious injury in April 2005 prevented him from playing any further matches for Ajax. His contract was eventually restructured to allow for a transfer to Italy in early 2006.
Success in Italy and Spain
Before officially joining Inter Milan, he was signed by Empoli to manage registration quotas. He did not make any appearances for the Empoli squad. He officially moved to Inter in July 2006 on a four-year deal.
While playing in Serie A, he adapted from a left-back to a left midfield role. This change used his pace and helped him win two consecutive Scudetti. He scored a well-known solo goal against Parma at the San Siro during his first season.
In July 2009, he moved to the Spanish club Barcelona for a fee of 5 million euros. He played an important role in helping the team win La Liga during his tenure. He also assisted a goal for Zlatan Ibrahimović during the 2010 Supercopa de España.
Paris Saint-Germain and international play
Maxwell joined Paris Saint-Germain in January 2012 after a medical exam. He spent six seasons at the club and won multiple Ligue 1 titles. He helped the team win the Coupe de la Ligue across four different seasons.
His final league match for the club took place in May 2017 against Caen. During this game, he wore the captain's armband and received a guard of honor from his teammates at the Parc des Princes. He now serves as the assistant sporting director for the club.
On the international stage, he represented the Brazil men's national football team. He made his senior debut in August 2013 during a match against Switzerland. He also participated in the 2014 FIFA World Cup held in Brazil.
