Who is Melissa Benoist?
Early life and education
Melissa Marie Benoist was born in Houston, Texas, on October 4, 1988. Her parents are Julie and Jim Benoist, a physician. After her parents divorced in 2002 when she was thirteen, she was raised primarily by her mother in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado. She has two sisters, Jessica and Kristina, and five half-siblings from her father's remarriage. Growing up in Colorado, she spent much of her childhood exploring national parks.
She began taking dance lessons in 1992 at age three, studying jazz, ballet, and tap. By age four, she was performing in a church play directed by her aunt, which launched her interest in community children's theatre. As a teenager, she attended the Academy of Theatre Arts in Littleton, Colorado, and performed for three summers at Disneyland. She participated in local productions such as Cinderella, A Chorus Line, and Bye Bye Birdie at the Town Hall Arts Center.
Rise to fame on television
In 2012, Melissa Benoist auditioned for the Fox musical comedy-drama series Glee. Following a rigorous audition process that included screen tests in California, she landed the role of Marley Rose. She appeared as a series regular during the fourth and fifth seasons. Her first episode was titled The New Rachel, where she performed a duet of New York State of Mind. This song reached the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.
After her time on Glee concluded, she achieved widespread prominence by portraying Kara Danvers in the superhero series Supergirl. Premiering in 2015 on CBS, the show later moved to The CW. She was the first woman to lead a prime time superhero series since Wonder Woman aired in 1979. She played the lead role for six seasons and 126 episodes, concluding in 2021. During her tenure, she also directed one episode and participated in multiple Arrowverse crossovers.
Film and Broadway career
Beyond television, she has appeared in several feature films. Her first film role was in the 2008 movie Tennessee. She appeared in the 2014 drama Whiplash, which received top honors at the Sundance Film Festival. Other film credits include The Longest Ride, Danny Collins, Band of Robbers, Lowriders, and the comedy-drama Sun Dogs. She also portrayed Rachel Koresh in the 2018 miniseries Waco.
Melissa made her Broadway debut in 2018, playing the title character in the musical Beautiful: The Carole King Musical at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. This limited run allowed her to return to her theatrical roots. In 2021, she established a production company called Three Things Productions. This company signed an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Studios to develop new projects.
