Who is Michael Dorn?
Early life and education
Michael Dorn was born in Luling, Texas, on December 9, 1952. His parents were Allie Lee and Arfentress Dorn Jr, and his grandfather was Arfentress Dorn Sr. He grew up in Pasadena, California, where he attended Blair High School.
Following high school, Michael studied radio and television production at Pasadena City College. After finishing his studies at the college, he pursued a career in music as a performer in several rock bands and traveled between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Acting career and Star Trek
Michael first appeared on screen in an uncredited role as Apollo Creed's bodyguard in the film Rocky. A few years later, he guest-starred in an episode of the television show W.E.B., which led him to acting teacher Charles E. Conrad. After studying with Conrad for six months, Michael secured a regular role on the crime drama series CHiPs.
Michael achieved his most well-known role as the Klingon character Lieutenant Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He was the last of the main actors cast for the series, preparing for his audition by isolating himself and adopting a taciturn demeanor. He reprised the role of Worf in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Picard, and several films, setting a record for the most on-screen appearances of any actor in the franchise.
Beyond the Star Trek universe, Michael has provided voice acting for various animated series and video games. His voice work includes characters in Gargoyles, I Am Weasel, Fallout 2, Mass Effect 2, and Invincible. He also made appearances in independent feature films such as Shadow Hours and Lessons for an Assassin.
Personal life and aviation
Michael is an accomplished pilot and a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He has flown with the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds, and has owned several jet aircraft, including a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star, a North American F-86 Sabre, and a Piper PA-46.
In addition to his aviation pursuits, Michael serves on the advisory board of the Air Force Aviation Heritage Foundation. In 2010, he shared that he was diagnosed with an early stage of prostate cancer, which led him to adopt a vegan diet.
