Who is Michael Rooker?
Early life and education
Michael Rooker was born in Jasper, Alabama. He grew up with nine brothers and sisters. When he was thirteen years old, his parents divorced. Following this, he moved to Chicago alongside his mother and siblings.
In Chicago, he attended the Wells Community Academy High School. He later pursued his interest in acting by studying at the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University.
Initial film success
His professional film debut occurred in 1986. He played the title character in the movie Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. This role was based on confessions from serial killer Henry Lee Lucas. Michael learned about the opportunity while acting in a play, as the play's director was handling prosthetics for the film.
The actor noted that he simply wanted a challenge, regardless of the script's quality at the time. The film became a critical success, which helped him secure additional roles in the industry.

Michael Rooker has maintained a long career in both drama and action genres. He appeared in Eight Men Out, Mississippi Burning, and JFK during his earlier years. His filmography expanded to include action and thriller movies such as Sea of Love, Days of Thunder, Cliffhanger, and Tombstone. He also participated in films like Mallrats, Slither, Super, and The Suicide Squad.
In 2010, he revealed via social media that he would join the AMC television series The Walking Dead. He portrayed Merle Dixon, a survivor of a zombie apocalypse. He appeared in the first two seasons as a guest star before becoming a regular cast member for the third season. Also, he has performed voice and motion capture work for video games including Call of Duty: Black Ops and The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.

Michael Rooker currently resides in California. He is married to his wife, Margot, and they have been together since they married in 1979. The couple has two daughters named Alynne and Gillian.
Outside of his professional acting commitments, he practices the Kyokushin style of karate.
