Early life and background
Michelle Forbes was born in Austin, Texas, on January 8, 1965, and grew up with a Mexican American heritage. During her youth, she initially hoped to pursue a career as a ballet dancer. To develop her skills, she began receiving formal acting training at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts located in Houston.
While visiting New York City at the age of 16, Michelle auditioned for a film project. Although she was not selected for that specific role, the experience led her to sign with the William Morris Agency. This important step marked the official beginning of her professional acting career.
Rise to television fame
In 1987, at the age of 22, Michelle landed a contract role on the daytime soap opera Guiding Light as Sonni Carrera Lewis. The role soon expanded into a dual role with the addition of a second character named Solita Carrera. Her performance on the program earned her a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 1990.
Following her time on Guiding Light, Michelle continued to build her profile through theater work and television guest appearances. She secured the recurring role of Ensign Ro Laren in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Although invited to join the spin-off Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, she declined to focus on film opportunities, though she later reprised the character in Star Trek: Picard.
Film and drama career
Michelle expanded her career into feature films during the 1990s. She received praise and a Saturn Award nomination for her performance as photographer Carrie Laughlin in the thriller Kalifornia. She also took on the lead female role in the 1994 black comedy Swimming with Sharks and appeared in the science fiction action sequel Escape from L.A.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Michelle maintained a steady presence on television. She played medical examiner Julianna Cox on Homicide: Life on the Street and portrayed Maryann Forrester in the HBO drama series True Blood. Her later television credits include roles in The Killing, Berlin Station, and New Amsterdam.
Personal life
Outside of her professional acting career, Michelle has maintained specific dietary choices for many years. She has been a vegetarian since her teenage years and later transitioned to a vegan lifestyle in 2011. She is married to Ross Kettle.
