Who is Nemo?
Early life and musical training
Nemo Mettler was born in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. Their father, Markus Mettler, is an entrepreneur and inventor, while their mother, Nadja Schnetzler, works as a journalist. The family includes a sister named Ella who is a photographer and collaborates with Nemo on artistic projects. The name Nemo holds a specific meaning, as it translates to no one in Latin. Nemo has previously noted that their parents chose this name because they felt that if their child was no one, they could become anyone.
Rise to fame and musical career
Nemo performed on the third season of the television show Die grössten Schweizer Talente as a teenager. In 2015, they released their debut EP titled Clownfisch. The following year, their single Cypher went viral. They released two further EPs in 2017 titled Momänt-Kids and Fundbüro. The single Du from the latter EP reached number four on the Swiss charts. In 2018, Nemo received four Swiss Music Prizes, including honors for best song of the year for Du and best concert performance.
Eurovision success and activism
On February 29, 2024, Nemo was announced as the Swiss representative for the Eurovision Song Contest. They performed their song The Code in the second semi-final on May 9. They won the final on May 11 with 591 points, becoming the first openly non-binary performer to win the competition. This victory marked the third time a Swiss act had won the contest.
Personal life
Nemo publicly came out as pansexual in 2022 via social media. In November 2023, they came out as non-binary in an article published by the SonntagsZeitung. Within that article, they stated a preference for being referred to by their given name, Nemo, rather than pronouns in German, and by they/them pronouns when speaking in English. As of 2024, they have been in a five-year relationship with their girlfriend.
