Biography
Who is Martin Sheen?
Early life and real name
Martin Sheen was born Ramon Antonio Gerardo Estevez in Dayton, Ohio, on August 3, 1940. His father was a Spanish immigrant who worked as a machinery inspector, and his Irish mother immigrated from County Tipperary. As the seventh of ten children, he grew up in the South Park neighborhood of Dayton and spent part of his childhood in Bermuda due to his father's employment.
During his childhood, Martin contracted polio and remained bedridden for a year before recovering through medical treatments. When he was ten years old, his mother passed away, but the family stayed together with assistance from a local Catholic church. He attended Chaminade High School in Dayton and developed an early passion for acting despite his father's disapproval.
How Martin became famous
Determined to pursue an acting career, Martin borrowed money from a Catholic priest and moved to New York City in his early twenties. He spent two years working with the Living Theatre company and adopted his professional name by combining the name of a casting director and a Catholic archbishop. He earned recognition on Broadway by co-starring in the 1964 play The Subject Was Roses, later reprising his role in the 1968 film adaptation.
His career achieved a major breakthrough when he starred alongside Sissy Spacek in Terrence Malick's crime drama Badlands in 1973. This performance led directly to his casting as U.S. Army Captain Benjamin L. Willard in Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now, which established him as a major international film star.
Television success and awards
Throughout his decades in television, Martin earned critical praise for numerous special projects and series regular roles. In 1974, he received an Emmy Award nomination for portraying Private Eddie Slovik in a biographical television film. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for guest starring in Murphy Brown in 1994, cementing his versatile presence across both dramatic and comedic television.
His most celebrated television work came when he portrayed President Josiah Bartlet in the political drama series The West Wing from 1999 to 2006. This famous role earned him six Primetime Emmy Award nominations for lead actor, tying the record for the most consecutive nominations without a win in that category. He later joined the cast of the Netflix series Grace and Frankie as Robert Hanson from 2015 to 2022.
Family and personal life
Martin married Janet Sheen, and together they raised four children: Charlie, Ramón, Emilio, and Renée Estevez. All four of his children followed in his footsteps to become professional actors. He directed his only feature film, Cadence, in 1990, casting his sons Charlie and Ramón alongside himself.
Beyond his acting work, Martin has maintained a long commitment to social justice and liberal politics, influenced by his early association with Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement.
