Who is Nicky Byrne?
Early life and football career
Nicky Byrne grew up in the Northside area of Dublin where he attended Pobalscoil Neasáin. Before his music career began, he played association football as a goalkeeper. He represented the Republic of Ireland at several youth levels including under-15, under-16, and under-18.
He moved to England after joining Leeds United as a professional player in 1995. He was part of the squad that won the FA Youth Cup in 1997. After leaving Leeds, he played for clubs such as Shelbourne, Cobh Ramblers, and St. Francis in the League of Ireland.
Music career with Westlife
In June 1998, Nicky attended an audition and joined the newly formed boyband Westlife alongside Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan, and Brian McFadden. The group achieved significant commercial success with numerous chart-topping singles and albums worldwide. Westlife released twelve albums and started on thirteen world tours.
Apart from singing, Nicky co-wrote many of the group's songs. In 2016, he represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest held in Stockholm with the song Sunlight. Following a hiatus, the group announced a reunion in October 2018 and later headlined the 20 Tour in 2019 to celebrate their twentieth anniversary.
Television and radio career
Nicky has worked extensively as a television and radio presenter. He hosted the reality television show Football's Next Star in October 2012. He also signed a contract with RTÉ 2fm in 2014 to host a weekday show alongside Jenny Greene before stepping down in 2019 to focus on his music commitments.
He began hosting the Irish version of Dancing with the Stars in January 2017. In addition to these roles, he has presented the Irish votes at the Eurovision Song Contest on multiple occasions and launched his own podcast titled Nicky Byrne HQ in October 2024.
Personal life and family
Nicky was born to parents Yvonne and Nicholas in Dublin. He married Georgina Ahern on August 5, 2003, at the Wicklow Register Office, followed by a church blessing in France. The couple share three children, including twin sons born in April 2007 and a daughter born in October 2013.
He stands at a height of 176 centimetres. Alongside his entertainment career, he has been involved in philanthropic efforts, including organising a fundraising event in memory of his late father to support heart attack awareness campaigns.
